Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Malfunction

The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor signal is missing or implausible. The CKP is essential — without it the ECU cannot synchronise injection or ignition, and the engine will not start or will stall.

Affected components

  • Crankshaft position sensor
  • Reluctor ring
  • Crankshaft position sensor wiring

Common causes

  • High likelihood: Sensor failed (heat damage common)
  • Low likelihood: Reluctor ring damaged or contaminated with metal debris
  • Medium likelihood: Wiring or connector fault

Diagnostic notes

  • The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
  • This code can affect emissions
  • A drive cycle may be required after repair
  • Reduced-power or limp mode may occur
