Transmission Range Control Module Communication Circuit

General fault on the communication line between the TCM and a separate transmission range control module (used on systems where the rotary/push-button selector lives in its own intelligent module that talks to the TCM via CAN or LIN).

Affected components

  • Range control module
  • Communication bus

Common causes

  • High likelihood: Bus fault between modules
  • Medium likelihood: Failed range control module
  • Low likelihood: Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Possible symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

Diagnostic notes

  • The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
