Transmission Friction Element B Apply Time Range/Performance

The time required to apply friction element B (a clutch or band inside the automatic transmission) is outside the expected window. Either too long (worn clutch, low pressure) or too short (sticky valve, mis-calibration).

Affected components

  • Friction element b
  • Hydraulic control unit
  • Pressure control solenoid

Common causes

  • High likelihood: Worn clutch friction plates
  • Medium likelihood: Pressure control solenoid drift
  • Medium likelihood: Internal hydraulic leak in apply circuit

Possible symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

Diagnostic notes

  • The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
