"A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

The bank 1 intake camshaft is more advanced than commanded, or the actuator does not respond as expected. Often caused by stuck-open oil control valves, sludge in VVT passages, or low oil pressure.

Affected components

  • Camshaft position actuator
  • Oil control valve
  • Engine oil

Common causes

  • High likelihood: Oil control valve stuck (advance position)
  • Medium likelihood: Sludge or debris in VVT oil passages
  • Medium likelihood: Low engine oil pressure or wrong oil viscosity

Possible symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

Diagnostic notes

  • The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
  • This code can affect emissions
  • A drive cycle may be required after repair
