Unable to Engage Gear 5

The transmission cannot engage gear 5 when it is commanded. The element that should apply for gear 5 — shift solenoid, clutch pack, or band — does not build or hold pressure, so the gear never locks in. Symptoms are slipping, no power transfer in that gear, or a forced limp mode. Causes: a failed shift solenoid, a worn clutch pack, or a valve-body or hydraulic-supply fault on the gear-5 circuit.

Affected components

Common causes

  • High likelihood: Gear 5 circuit failed

Possible symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

Diagnostic notes
