The multi-function select circuit produces values that do not match any valid bit pattern — multiple positions asserted simultaneously, or values outside the calibrated range.

- High likelihood: Contaminated rotary encoder contacts
- Low likelihood: Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Low likelihood: Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Possible symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
