"A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
The bank 1 intake camshaft is more advanced than commanded, or the actuator does not respond as expected. Often caused by stuck-open oil control valves, sludge in VVT passages, or low oil pressure.
Affected components
- Camshaft position actuator
- Oil control valve
- Engine oil
Common causes
- High likelihood: Oil control valve stuck (advance position)
- Medium likelihood: Sludge or debris in VVT oil passages
- Medium likelihood: Low engine oil pressure or wrong oil viscosity
Possible symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
Diagnostic notes
- The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
- This code can affect emissions
- A drive cycle may be required after repair
