Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent

The TPS signal shows intermittent dropouts that do not stay outside threshold long enough to trigger P0122/P0123. Drive-by-wire systems are sensitive to this and may briefly enter limp-home mode each time.

Affected components

  • Throttle position sensor
  • Throttle position sensor wiring

Common causes

  • High likelihood: Loose or oxidised connector
  • Medium likelihood: Sensor track worn at one spot (older potentiometer-type)
  • Low likelihood: Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Possible symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

Diagnostic notes

  • The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
  • This code can affect emissions
  • A drive cycle may be required after repair
