Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction

The transmission range sensor (PRNDL switch / inhibitor switch) signal is implausible — multiple positions active simultaneously, or no position recognized. Engine may refuse to start unless P or N is detected.

Affected components

  • Transmission range sensor
  • Shift linkage

Common causes

  • High likelihood: Range sensor misadjusted
  • Medium likelihood: Range sensor failed

Possible symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

Diagnostic notes

  • The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
  • Reduced-power or limp mode may occur
