Stuck in Gear 8
The transmission has entered 8th gear but cannot leave it on command — typically a stuck shift solenoid or a stuck-on friction element holding the 8th-gear pattern locked. The TCM forces limp-home mode if upshift/downshift attempts fail repeatedly.
Affected components
- Shift solenoid
- Clutch pack
Common causes
- High likelihood: Stuck shift solenoid
- Medium likelihood: Stuck-on friction element
Possible symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
Diagnostic notes
- The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
