Hybrid/EV Battery System Precharge Current Too High

During the HV battery precharge sequence, the inrush current exceeds the calibrated maximum. Indicates short on the DC-link side or insufficient precharge resistance.

Affected components

  • Hybrid precharge resistor
  • Dc link capacitor
  • Bms

Common causes

  • High likelihood: Short on DC-link (capacitor or load)
  • Medium likelihood: Precharge resistor shorted
  • Low likelihood: Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Possible symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

Diagnostic notes

  • The malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate
  • Reduced-power or limp mode may occur
